A standard bumper pool table comes with 12 bumpers, but some tables have 14 or even 16 bumpers.  Bumper pool tables are either a traditional rectangle shape, or they come in a more challenging octagon shape.  Octagon tables give you a bigger challenge because you have 8 side rails to bank your shots off of instead of the traditional 4 rails.  Often octagon tables are designed to be multi-game tables, which means you can use it as a poker table as well as a dining table.

Size Matters - Room, Table and Cue Stick

Not only are bumper pool tables more convenient because they fit better in smaller rooms, but the pool sticks used are smaller as well.  Traditional pool tables are big enough, but then you add the size of the pool cue, which can be up to 57" and now you need a lot of space to play your game.  Not so with bumper pool, which is why more and more people are choosing a bumper pool table instead of a traditional pool table for their homes and offices.

Bumper pool can be played with two to four players.  Each player gets 5 pool balls.  Just like in regular pool the object of the game is to shoot each of your pool balls into the pocket at the opposite end of the table.  However, there is no cue ball in bumper pool.  If you shoot your opponent's ball into your own pocket, there is no penalty, but the opponent gets the point credited to him - you've helped your opponent instead of yourself!  If one player shoots his last pool ball into his opponent's cup, then he forfeits the game.
